About Queens Lake Nature Reserve

Queens Lake Nature Reserve is located in the southern Sierra Nevada of California, south of Yosemite National Park near the small community of Shaver Lake. The reserve encompasses a high-altitude landscape centered around Queens Lake, a pristine alpine lake surrounded by dense stands of pine, fir, and cedar. The area sits at about 7,200 feet elevation, with a mix of meadows, rocky outcrops, and forested ridges. This habitat supports a diverse ecosystem including black bears, mule deer, mountain lions, and numerous bird species such as Steller's jays and woodpeckers. Established to protect the unique alpine lake environment and its watershed, the reserve offers excellent opportunities for low-impact backcountry hiking, fishing for trout in Queens Lake and nearby streams, and birdwatching. Trails range from easy lakeside walks to more challenging off-trail explorations of the surrounding forest and ridge lines. The remoteness and relatively low visitor impact contribute to a quiet and immersive natural experience. While there are no developed campgrounds within the reserve, dispersed backcountry camping is permitted with appropriate precautions. The area attracts outdoor enthusiasts seeking peaceful scenery, clear night skies for stargazing, and seasonal wildflowers in spring and early summer. Access roads are generally open from late spring through fall, with winter snow limiting entry and activities primarily to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing nearby. Overall, Queens Lake Nature Reserve provides a serene Sierra Nevada environment for visitors to enjoy water-based recreation, hiking, and wildlife observation away from more crowded parks.
